Plants 101: Fun Guide to Not Kill Your House Plants!

Updated: Mar 16

In today's fast-paced, urban world, the allure of bringing nature indoors has never been stronger. Houseplants not only enhance the aesthetic of our living spaces but also promote a healthier, more harmonious lifestyle. In this blog, let's dive into essential tips for plant care that I've gathered over the years - your toolkit for how to care for your plants, helping you evolve into a confident plant parent.

Select Your New Plant Companions

The key to thriving plants starts with choosing the right ones for your environment. It’s about asking the right questions: How much sunlight does your space get? Is your home more Sahara desert or Amazon rainforest in humidity? And how often are you really going to remember to water them? For beginners, resilient plants like snake plants, pothos, or spider plants are your best bets. As you get more comfortable, you can start experimenting with more high-maintenance plants like fiddle leaf figs or variegated crotons.

Establish a Plant Care Routine

Consistency is key in the realm of plant care. A routine that includes regular watering, pest checks, and pruning is crucial. A few years back, I discovered Blossom, an app that revolutionized my plant care routine. It helps you keep track of all your plant care needs and even nudges you when it’s time to water, repot, or fertilize!

Water Wisely

One of the biggest hurdles for beginners (and something I learned the hard way) is finding the right watering balance. Overwatering is a common faux pas. A general rule is to let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings. And remember, it's okay to skip a watering day if you're unsure, just check again tomorrow!

Lighting: A Plant's Best Friend

Just like us, plants need their daily dose of vitamin D but in varying amounts. Consider the natural habitat of your plants when deciding where to place them. Low-light champions like ZZ plants or pothos are great for dimmer spaces, while sun lovers like spider plants or succulents bask in bright, indirect light. A pro tip: rotate your plants occasionally to ensure even exposure to sunlight!

Embrace the Learning Curve

Every dropped leaf or wilted stem is a chance to learn. Plants communicate through their leaves, telling you if they need more care, less water, or better lighting. Remember, becoming a plant pro is a journey filled with trial and error.

So there you have it, your starter pack on how to care for your plants. Remember, it's all about the journey. And if you ever find yourself in a plant predicament, we at DPC are here to help. Happy parenting! 🌿🌱🌵
